AllthefiguresabovearereleasedinGuangdong’sprovincial"TwoSessions".It’sthelargestpoliticalgatheringoftheyear,wheretheReportontheWorkoftheGuangdongGovernmentofeachyearisreleased.

Thebiggesthighlightofthereport-Guangdong'seconomicperformancein2023andplansfor2024.Lastyear,Guangdong’sGDPhit13.57trillionyuan,withanannualgrowthrateof4.8%.

Thegrowthratemightseemabitmildfortheeconomicpowerhouse,butit’sthefirstprovincetohavecrossedthe13-trillionyuanthreshold,whichisabout2trillionU.S.dollars.Itisaremarkableachievementifyouconsiderthefactthatonlyabout10countriesintheworldhaveanGDPhigherthanthat.

Specifically,Guangdongcomesfirstinmanyareastoo,suchasforeigntrade,industrialrevenueandinnovation.

Especiallyunderweakenedglobaldemand,Guangdonghasmanagedtosecureapositivegrowthinimportsandexports,rankingfirstinthecountryfor38consecutiveyears,whichisnoeasytask.Andintermsofinnovation,GuangdonghasthemostR&Dpersonnel,effectiveinventionpatentsandthemosthigh-techenterprises.

Amongitsprioritiesthisyear,I’dliketohighlighttwoofthem.OneistheenhanceddevelopmentoftheGreaterBayArea.Thisyearmarksthe5thanniversaryofChinaannouncingthemasterplanfortheregion.It’sofnationalimportancetobuilditintoaworld-classbayareaintermsoftrade,technology,manufacturingandinfrastructure.

Secondisbalancingregionaldevelopments.Despitebeingtherichestprovince,theeconomicdevelopmentishighlyunbalancedbetweenurbanandruralareas.Alotmoreeffortsareguaranteedtobeinplacetosupportindustriesinlessdevelopedpartsoftheprovince,whichinreturnwillalsoboostGuangdong’seconomyasawhole.
